Night has fallen here on the first day of this new year and decade, but oh, what a beautiful first day it was!
The weather in this little corner of the world today was perfect for hiking. Of course, by hiking, I mean meandering and strolling along the trail.
Morning sunshine streaming through the trees and soft wispy clouds riding the swift cool winter breeze. A quick stop at Saxapahaw General Store for a couple of coffees to go, and we were on our way.

This part of the Haw River Trail is an easy walk in the winter sunshine on this day.
The picture is deceptive, it looks like we have the whole trail to ourselves. In reality we encountered many folks, solo hikers and groups out for their own first day hikes. We also met some really amazing doggies with some of those hikers.
He’s hard to see, but there is a beautiful red cardinal surveying the day from the branch reaching over the trail. Before the hike was over, we encountered cardinals, wrens, a busy woodpecker, and a smallish hawk guarding a thicket by one of the bridges.
I don’t think there’s snow in the forecast, but those gathering clouds and the chill in the air remind me it’s always possible in January.
Out and back, it’s only about 3 miles, but it was far enough to talk about so many changes that have happened these last days, weeks and months, and work in some planning for this brand new year and decade. Conversations among ourselves, conversations with others along the trail, and being present to hear the full voice of nature. What a great way to start a new decade.
I wish you a year filled with good health, much love, and grand adventures.
Hello 2020, It’s good to be here.
